More metrics for the EL monitor (#4707)
* `engine_api_response_time` provides a histogram for the Engine API
  response times for each unique pair ot URL and request type.

* All engine API requests are now tracked

Other changes:

The client will no longer exit on start-up if it fails to connect to
a properly configured EL node.

When using `--history=prune`, `dag.tail.slot` may advance beyond the

that the `dag.tail.slot` is no longer considered for LC pruning.
It is still considered to check whether new data can be produced.

Support for driving multiple EL nodes from a single Nimbus BN (#4465)
* Support for driving multiple EL nodes from a single Nimbus BN

Full list of changes:

* Eth1Monitor has been renamed to ELManager to match its current
  responsibilities better.

* The ELManager is no longer optional in the code (it won't have
  a nil value under any circumstances).

* The support for subscribing for headers was removed as it only
  worked with WebSockets and contributed significant complexity
  while bringing only a very minor advantage.

* The `--web3-url` parameter has been deprecated in favor of a
  new `--el` parameter. The new parameter has a reasonable default
  value and supports specifying a different JWT for each connection.
  Each connection can also be configured with a different set of
  responsibilities (e.g. download deposits, validate blocks and/or
  produce blocks). On the command-line, these properties can be
  configured through URL properties stored in the #anchor part of
  the URL. In TOML files, they come with a very natural syntax
  (althrough the URL scheme is also supported).

* The previously scattered EL-related state and logic is now moved
  to `eth1_monitor.nim` (this module will be renamed to `el_manager.nim`
  in a follow-up commit). State is assigned properly either to the
  `ELManager` or the to individual `ELConnection` objects where
  appropriate.

  The ELManager executes all Engine API requests against all attached
  EL nodes, in parallel. It compares their results and if there is a
  disagreement regarding the validity of a certain payload, this is
  detected and the beacon node is protected from publishing a block
  with a potential execution layer consensus bug in it.

  The BN provides metrics per EL node for the number of successful or
  failed requests for each type Engine API requests. If an EL node
  goes offline and connectivity is resoted later, we report the
  problem and the remedy in edge-triggered fashion.

* More progress towards implementing Deneb block production in the VC
  and comparing the value of blocks produced by the EL and the builder
  API.

* Adds a Makefile target for the zhejiang testnet

* Fix issue when prepareBeaconCommitteeSubnet() do not perform actions when BN is optimistically synced only.

* Fix Defect issue.

* Fix submit/publish returning `false` when operation was successful.

* Address review comments.

* Fix some client calls unable to receive `execution_optimistic` field, mark BN as OptSynced when such request has been made.

* Adjust warning levels.

Local sim impovements (#4551)
* Local sim impovements

* Added support for running Capella and EIP-4844 simulations
  by downloading the correct version of Geth.

* Added support for using Nimbus remote signer and Web3Signer.
  Use 2 out of 3 threshold signing configuration in the mainnet
  configuration and regular remote signing in the minimal one.

* The local testnet simulation can now use a payload builder.
  This is currently not activated in CI due to lack of automated
  procedures for installing third-party relays or builders.

  You are adviced to use mergemock for now, but for most realistic
  results, we can create a simple builder based on the nimbus-eth1
  codebase that will be able to propose transactions from the regular
  network mempool.

* Start the simulation from a merged state. This would allow us
  to start removing pre-merge functionality such as the gossip
  subsciption logic. The commit also removes the merge-forcing
  hack installed after the TTD removal.

* Consolidate all the tools used in the local simulation into a
  single `ncli_testnet` binary.

restore doppelganger check on connectivity loss (#4616)
* restore doppelganger check on connectivity loss

https://github.com/status-im/nimbus-eth2/pull/4398 introduced a
regression in functionality where doppelganger detection would not be
rerun during connectivity loss. This PR reintroduces this check and
makes some adjustments to the implementation to simplify the code flow
for both BN and VC.

* track when check was last performed for each validator (to deal with
late-added validators)
* track when we performed a doppel-detectable activity (attesting) so as
to avoid false positives
* remove nodeStart special case (this should be treated the same as
adding a validator dynamically just after startup)

Skip execution payload verification for finalized blocks (#4591)
While syncing the finalized portion of the chain, the execution client
cannot efficiently sync and most of the time returns `SYNCING` - in this
PR, we use CL-verified optmistic sync as long as the block is claimed to
be finalized, only occasionally updating the EL with progress.

Although a peer might lie about what is finalized and what isn't,
eventually we'll call the execution client - thus, all a dishonest
client can do is delay execution verification slightly. Gossip blocks in
particular are never assumed to be finalized.

cache LC headers and sync committees for bootstrap (#4499)
To allow LC data retention longer than the one for historic states,
introduce persistent DB caches for `current_sync_committee` and
`LightClientHeader` for finalized epoch boundary blocks.
This way, historic `LightClientBootstrap` requests may still be honored
even after pruning. Note that historic `LightClientUpdate` requests are
already answered using fully persisted objects, so don't need changes.

Sync committees and headers are cached on finalization of new data.
For existing data, info is lazily cached on first access.

use `ForkedLightClientStore` internally (#4512)
When running `nimbus_light_client`, we persist the latest header from
`LightClientStore.finalized_header` in a database across restarts.
Because the data format is derived from the latest `LightClientStore`,
this could lead to data being persisted in pre-release formats.

To enable us to test later `LightClientStore` versions on devnets,
transition to a `ForkedLightClientStore` internally that is only
migrated to newer forks on-demand (instead of starting at latest).

Enable validator monitor by default (#4468)
By enabling the validator monitor, more precise information about the
lifecycle of an attestation is logged at the higher `NOTICE` log level
while current `sent` messages are logged at `INF` instead, since they
are less interesting.

In particular, missed attestations and those that vote for the wrong
head are now detected and logged at NOTICE.

In addition to logging, this feature enables rich metrics around
attestation and sync committee performance - by default, validators are
tracked in aggregate but a detailed mode exists as well

This feature has been available since early Nimbus days, but it has now
been tuned and optimised such that it is safe to enable by default, even
for large setups.

* enable automatic validator monitoring by default
* replace `--validator-monitor-totals` flag with
`--validator-monitor-details` - the detailed mode is disabled by default
* lower "sent" log level to `INF` for several messages - in particular
those that are traced by the validator monitor

This is a retake on #3531 which was later reverted in #3578.

indicate that they depend only on presence of any valid object.

Other changes:

* Disabled Geth snap sync in the simulation

When all Geth nodes are configured to run with snap sync enabled, they all
start snap sync after the first forkchoiceUpdated which causes the BNs to
skip validator duties because the EL is syncing. The snap sync never completes
due to poor connectivity between the Geth nodes in the simulation.

History pruning (fixes #4419) (#4445)
Introduce (optional) pruning of historical data - a pruned node will
continue to answer queries for historical data up to
`MIN_EPOCHS_FOR_BLOCK_REQUESTS` epochs, or roughly 5 months, capping
typical database usage at around 60-70gb.

To enable pruning, add `--history=prune` to the command line - on the
first start, old data will be cleared (which may take a while) - after
that, data is pruned continuously.

When pruning an existing database, the database will not shrink -
instead, the freed space is recycled as the node continues to run - to
free up space, perform a trusted node sync with a fresh database.

When switching on archive mode in a pruned node, history is retained
from that point onwards.

History pruning is scheduled to be enabled by default in a future
release.

In this PR, `minimal` mode from #4419 is not implemented meaning
retention periods for states and blocks are always the same - depending
on user demand, a future PR may implement `minimal` as well.

Always-on optimistic mode (#4458)
With https://github.com/status-im/nimbus-eth2/pull/4420 implemented, the
checks that we perform are equivalent to those of a `SYNCING` EL - as
such, we can treat missing EL the same as SYNCING and proceed with an
optimistic sync.

This mode of operation significantly speeds up recovery after an offline
EL event because the CL is already synced and can immediately inform the
EL of the latest head.

It also allows using a beacon node for consensus archival queries
without an execution client.

* deprecate `--optimistic` flag
* log block details on EL error, soften log level because we can now
continue to operate
* `UnviableFork` -> `Invalid` when block hash verification fails -
failed hash verification is not a fork-related block issue

Backfill only up to MIN_EPOCHS_FOR_BLOCK_REQUESTS blocks (#4421)
When backfilling, we only need to download blocks that are newer than
MIN_EPOCHS_FOR_BLOCK_REQUESTS - the rest cannot reliably be fetched from
the network and does not have to be provided to others.

This change affects only trusted-node-synced clients - genesis sync
continues to work as before (because it needs to construct a state by
building it from genesis).

Those wishing to complete a backfill should do so with era files
instead.

Bugfix: The VC was producing invalid sync committee contributions (#4343)
Since the sync committee duties are no longer updated on every slot
and previously the sync committee aggregators selection proofs were
generated during the duties update, this now resulted in the client
using stale selection proofs (they must be generated at each slot).

The fix consists of moving the selection proof generation logic in
a different function which is properly executed on each slot.

Other changes:

* The logtrace tool has been enhanced with a framework for adding
  new simpler log aggregation and analysis algorithms.
  The default CI testnet simulation will now ensure that the blocks
  in the network have reasonable sync committee participation.

State-only checkpoint state startup (#4251)
Currently, we require genesis and a checkpoint block and state to start
from an arbitrary slot - this PR relaxes this requirement so that we can
start with a state alone.

The current trusted-node-sync algorithm works by first downloading
blocks until we find an epoch aligned non-empty slot, then downloads the
state via slot.

However, current
[proposals](https://github.com/ethereum/beacon-APIs/pull/226) for
checkpointing prefer finalized state as
the main reference - this allows more simple access control and caching
on the server side - in particular, this should help checkpoint-syncing
from sources that have a fast `finalized` state download (like infura
and teku) but are slow when accessing state via slot.

Earlier versions of Nimbus will not be able to read databases created
without a checkpoint block and genesis. In most cases, backfilling makes
the database compatible except where genesis is also missing (custom
networks).

* backfill checkpoint block from libp2p instead of checkpoint source,
when doing trusted node sync
* allow starting the client without genesis / checkpoint block
* perform epoch start slot lookahead when loading tail state, so as to
deal with the case where the epoch start slot does not have a block
* replace `--blockId` with `--state-id` in TNS command line
* when replaying, also look at the parent of the last-known-block (even
if we don't have the parent block data, we can still replay from a
"parent" state) - in particular, this clears the way for implementing
state pruning
* deprecate `--finalized-checkpoint-block` option (no longer needed)

use LRU strategy for shuffling/epoch caches (#4196)
When EL `newPayload` is slow (e.g., Raspberry Pi with Besu), the epoch
and shuffling caches tend to fill up with multiple copies per epoch when
processing gossip and performing validator duties close to wall slot.
The old strategy of evicting oldest epoch led to the same item being
evicted over and over, leading to blocking of over 5 minutes in extreme
cases where alternate epochs/shuffling got loaded repeatedly.
Changing the cache eviction strategy to least-recently-used seems to
improve the situation drastically. A simple implementation was selected
based on single linked-list without a hashtable.

instead, eventually re-assigning a `BlockRef` to them.

rm require engine API check (#4144)
The `eth1_monitor` check to require engine API from bellatrix onward
has issues in setups where the EL and CL are started simultaneously
because the EL may not be ready to answer requests by the time that the
check is performed. This can be observed, e.g., on Raspberry Pi 4 when
using Besu as the EL client. Now that the merge transition happened, the
check is also not that useful anymore, as users have other ways to know
that their setup is not working correctly (e.g., repeated exchange logs)

This patch changes the scoring in that case to `PeerScoreMissingBlocks`
for consistency with range requests solely covering non-finalized slots,

use `nim-websock` instead of `news` (#4061)
`news` has a few open issues that are not present in `nim-websock`:
1. There is a 1 second delay between each MB of sent data.
2. Cancelling an ongoing `send` makes the entire WebSocket unusable.
3. Control packets do not have priority over ongoing message frames.

Using `news`, there are quite a few of these messages in Geth:
```
Previously seen beacon client is offline. Please ensure it is
operational to follow the chain!
```
It may take quite some time to reconnect when this happens.

Using `nim-websock`, this message still occurs because `eth1_monitor`
reconnects the EL connection when no new blocks occurred for 5 minutes,
but reconnecting is quick and the message is rarer.

descore on empty response for range w known block (#4050)
The sync protocol does not distinguish between:
- All requested slots are empty
- Peer does not have data available about requested range

Therefore, we treat EOF for `beacon_blocks_by_range` and for
`beacon_blocks_by_range` as valid responses, as if the entire epoch
really contained no single block for any slot. Once a followup response
provides new blocks, we detect that some blocks were missing and rewind.

During backfill, we also request the known-to-exist `backfill.slot`,
so we can actually detect whether an epoch really does not have blocks
or whether a response is incomplete (`PeerScoreNoBlocks`).

accelerate EL sync with LC with `--sync-light-client` (#4041)
When the BN-embedded LC makes sync progress, pass the corresponding
execution block hash to the EL via `engine_forkchoiceUpdatedV1`.
This allows the EL to sync to wall slot while the chain DAG is behind.
Renamed `--light-client` to `--sync-light-client` for clarity, and
`--light-client-trusted-block-root` to `--trusted-block-root` for
consistency with `nimbus_light_client`.

Note that this does not work well in practice at this time:
- Geth sticks to the optimistic sync:
  "Ignoring payload while snap syncing" (when passing the LC head)
  "Forkchoice requested unknown head" (when updating to LC head)
- Nethermind syncs to LC head but does not report ancestors as VALID,
  so the main forward sync is still stuck in optimistic mode:
  "Pre-pivot block, ignored and returned Syncing"

To aid EL client teams in fixing those issues, having this available
as a hidden option is still useful.

reduce LC optsync latency (#4002)
The optimistic sync spec was updated since the LC based optsync module
was introduced. It is no longer necessary to wait for the justified
checkpoint to have execution enabled; instead, any block is okay to be
optimistically imported to the EL client, as long as its parent block
has execution enabled. Complex syncing logic has been removed, and the
LC optsync module will now follow gossip directly, reducing the latency
when using this module. Note that because this is now based on gossip
instead of using sync manager / request manager, that individual blocks
may be missed. However, EL clients should recover from this by fetching
missing blocks themselves.

do not descore peer when EL connection fails (#4020)
When the EL fails to respond to `newPayload`, e.g., because connection
to the EL got interrupted, or due to misconfiguration, optimistic blocks
cannot be imported according to spec. This condition is treated the same
as if the peer returned a block with missing parent which gets the block
out of our processing queue, but can have nasty side effects.

For example, if sync manager asks for validation of a block known to be
in the finalized range, if it receives a `MissingParent` verdict, the
peer is immediately removed from the peer pool.

```
By delaying issuing a verdict until the EL connection is restored and
`newPayload` successfully ran, the problem should be fixed. This also
induces back pressure to the sync manager by stopping download of new
blocks (or re-downloading the same block over and over again).
Fix a potential segfault and various potential stalls (#4003)
* Fixes a segfault during block production when the Keymanager API
  is disabled. The Keymanager is now disabled on half of the local
  testnet nodes to catch such problems in the future.
* Fixes multiple potential stalls from REST requests being done
  without a timeout. From practice, we know that such requests
  can hang forever if not cancelled with a timeout. At best,
  this would be a resource leak, at worst, it may lead to a
  full stall of the client and missed validator duties.
Doppelganger detection bug fix (#3997)
When the client was started without any validators, the doppelganger
duties were inappropriately skipped.
cache shuffling separately from other EpochRef data (fixes #2677) (#3990)
In order to avoid full replays when validating attestations hailing from
untaken forks, it's better to keep shufflings separate from `EpochRef`
and perform a lookahead on the shuffling when processing the block that
determines them.
This also helps performance in the case where REST clients are trying to
perform lookahead on attestation duties and decreases memory usage by
sharing shufflings between EpochRef instances of the same dependent
root.
import EL deposits even when EL is stuck (#3956)
* import EL deposits even when EL is stuck
The `eth1_monitor` only starts importing deposits once the EL reports a
new head block. However, the EL may be stuck at a block, e.g., the TTD.
By polling the latest EL block once after subscribing to new EL block
events it is ensured that deposits are still imported in this situation.
* also poll once on re-connects
* update `eth1_latest_head` metric in poll mode
* add comment about similar polling vs events parts
avoid materializing potentially long deposits seq (#3947)
When fetching eth1 data and deposits for a new block proposal, the list
of deposits from previous eth1 data to the next one is fully loaded into
a `seq`. This can potentially be a very long list in active periods.
Changing this to an `iterator` saves memory by ensuring that the entire
list is no longer materialized; only the `DepositData` roots are needed.
track request chunk size across EL reconnects (#3960)
When the EL connection is interrupted, deposits are once more requested
in chunks of 5000 blocks. This is a problem when the response takes over
a minute to produce and consistently times out as followup requests with
lower chunk sizes may no longer work after a request was canceled, e.g.,
when using Geth with websockets. By keeping track of `blocksPerRequest`
across EL reconnections, it is possible to recover from this by avoiding
to continuously repeat the initial request with the full 5000 blocks.
Also cleans up one more "retry of retry" instance; `DataProviderTimeout`
is a `CatchableError` and already handled by the existing retry logic.
Minor post-merge cleanups (#3945)
https://github.com/status-im/nimbus-eth2/pull/3944
The use of nested `awaitWithRetries` calls would have
resulted in an unexpected number of retries (3x3).
We now use regular `await` in outer layer to avoid the problem.
https://github.com/status-im/nimbus-eth2/pull/3943
The new code has an invariant that the `headMerkleizer` field in
the `Eth1Chain` is always kept in sync with the blocks stored in
the chain.
This invariant is now enforced better by doing the necessary merkleizer updates
in the `Eth1Chain.addBlock` function, in the `Eth1Chain.init` function and in the
`Eth1Chain.reset` function.
consider blocks with deposits in eth1 data vote (#3944)
When importing blocks with deposits from the EL, the timestamp is never
initialized for them. Therefore, only blocks without deposits (for which
the timestamp is obtained) are considered for `is_candidate_block`.
This is fixed by also importing timestamps for blocks with deposits.
Etan Kissling 4ef621f926
fix obtaining deposits after connection loss (#3943)
* fix obtaining deposits after connection loss
When an error occurs during Eth1 deposits import, the already imported
blocks are kept while the connection to the EL is re-established.
However, the corresponding merkleizer is not persisted, leading to any
future deposits no longer being properly imported. This is quite common
when syncing a fresh Nimbus instance against an already-synced Geth EL.
Fixed by persisting the head merkleizer together with the blocks.
