This commit moves weights out of the "parameters" to TimelineCred. This
makes sense, because the Weights are now passed to TimelineCred via the
included WeightedGraph. As such, we now have the `api/load` options
include explicit Weights that are used as overrides, rather than having
them be included in the TimelineCred parameters.
Test plan: I've manually tested this commit by:
- Changing weights in the explorer, and verifying that the `recalculate
cred` button activates as expected, and the new weights are used
correctly in the resultant distribution.
- Verifying that downloading weights form the UI still works.
- Verified that uploading weights to the UI still works.
- Verifying that passing command-line weights files still works.
Also, `yarn test` passes.
This commit changes `api/load` and downstream consumers to use
WeightedGraphs instead of regular Graphs. In addition to `api/load`, we
also modify the frontends and the timeline cred calculation module.
However, we don't yet _use_ the weights from the WeightedGraph. So as to
make this commit easier to review, it only changes the data type being
passed around; however in practice the consumers ignore the weights and
simply use the underlying graph. A followon commit will modify the
consumers so that they properly retrieve weights from within the
WeightedGraph.
This is a major step towards #1557.
Test plan:
`yarn test --full` passes; manual testing verifies that the frontend
still displays cred properly, and that modifying the weights and
re-calculating shows that the weights are being used properly.
As discussed in [this GitHub comment][1], it doesn't make sense for user
node types (or user nodes) to have non-zero weight. The reason is that
we use weights for minting cred. Minting cred to users in general
doesn't make sense (having more user accounts is not intrinsically
valuable to a project) and minting cred to specific users is
inappropriate (it means that users' cred is being determined by their
power to influence the weights, rather than because of the value of
their contributions).
This commit makes two changes:
- It sets the default weight for all user types to 0. This has no
implications for cred, since the user weights were already (implicitly)
discarded because users all have null timestamps.
- It filters user node types from the weight config, so the UI no longer
incorrectly suggests that user node weights can be meaningfully changed.
As a result of the second change, the identity plugin now displays in
the weight change UI but has no node or edge types associated. As a
followon commit, we may want to add a bit of filtering logic to clean
that up.
Test plan:
Setting the default weights to 0 for the user types has no effect on
cred, as can be manually ascertained by taking an existing cred
instance, changing the user type weights, and re-calculating.
Filtering the user node types from the WeightConfig is validated through
manual inspection testing.
I've found that frontend unit testing of changes like this has limited
value; since there aren't subtle edge cases to validate, and regressions
are unlikely, I don't think we need a unit test at this time. Therefore,
I haven't added formal tests.

`empty` is a more descriptive name for a `Weights` object that has no
weights set, rather than `defaultWeights`.
In every case where we were importing `defaultWeights` as a direct
symbol, I switched to importing the whole module, as usage of
`Weights.empty` makes it clear that the empty object returned will be an
empty weights (as opposed to an empty list or some other empty type).
This is as proposed in the reviews from #1538.
Test plan: It's just a rename and change in imports, so `yarn flow` would
catch any error. `yarn test` passes.
Note: this is a port of #1583, which merged to the wrong branch.
As part of #1557, I want to move the concept of weights into core, so
that plugins can produce a WeightedGraph rather than raw Graph. This
will allow us to do cred computation directly on the data we get from
the plugins, without recourse to plugin metadata.
Test plan: It's a simple file move; `yarn test` suffices.
I'm currently on a quest to separate cred computation away from any
plugin metadata (see #1557). This means we need a way to represent node
and edge weights without any explicit concept of 'types'.
This commit is a first step towards that. It removes the distinction
between 'type weights' and 'manual weights' in the weights data type.
Instead, we now just have node weights and edge weights. In contrast to
before, all weights are now interpreted as prefix matchers, e.g. a
single node or edge may match multiple weights; when this occurs, the
weights compose multiplicatively.
Since types were already identified by prefix, if a plugin wants to
assign a weight to a particular type, it may do so by specifying a
weight for that type's prefix. As before, it's possible to have a
type-level weight and a weight on a specific node, and compose them
multiplicatively.
As an added bonus, we could now sensibly have 'plugin-level' weights and
'type-level weights' and compose them multiplicatively. Thus, if we
realized that the Foo plugin is undervalued relative to the Bar plugin,
we could increase the Foo weight rather than needing to adjust all of
its types individually.
So as to keep the scope for this commit somewhat manageable, I modified
the underlying data type for Weights, but not any of the cred
computation interfaces. The weights pipeline still takes the plugin
declarations, and we still get the default type level weights from the
plugin's types. A future commit will modify the pipeline so that the
plugins provide default types alongside the Graph.
I deliberately did not provide an upgrade handler for the old style
weights JSON. This is sensible as the semantics are now different. In
the past, it was possible to specify a weight for a single node without
affecting the weights of other nodes whose addresses have the first
node's address as a prefix. Since this is no longer possible, there is
no universally "correct" way to handle the old weights files. In
practice, there are so few users that it is not a big deal either way.
Test plan:
This change has implications across the codebase and UI. In addition to
`yarn test --full` passing, I verified that:
- updating and recomputing works in the mainline UI
- updating and recomputing works in the legacy UI
- downloading weights from the UI and then explicitly loading them still
works

This commit upgrades the legacy explorer to now properly include types
from all loaded plugins, rather than just the GitHub plugin. This makes
the legacy UI much more usable for inspecting SourceCred's own

This commit modifies the TimelineExplorer so that the user can both see
the chosen alpha value, and change it. Alpha has a pretty profound
impact on the final scores, and I want to tweak it for CredSperiment
week two, so this is an important addition.
Test plan: Modify the alpha, re-run cred calculation, and observe that
the scores change. `yarn test` passes.
This fixes a bug introduced in #1371, where selecting a type other than
"All users" and then trying to reselect "All users" would break the UI.
Test plan: Manual inspection; load an instance, try selecting a
different type, and then go back to "All users". It now works as
expected.
At present, every place in the codebase that needs
TimelineCredParameters constructs them ad-hoc, meaning we don't have any
shared defaults across different consumers.
This commit adds a new type, `PartialTimelineCredParameters`, which
is basically `TimelineCredParameters` with every field marked optional.
Callers can then choose to override any fields where they want
non-default values. A new internal `partialParams` function promotes
these partial parameters to full parameters.
All the public interfaces for using params (namely,
`TimelineCred.compute` and `TimelineCred.reanalyze`) now accept optional
partial params. If the params are not specified, default values are
used; if partial params are provided, all the explicitly provided values
are used, and unspecified values are initialized to default values.
Test plan: A simple unit test was added to ensure that weights overrides
work as intended. `git grep "intervalDecay: "` reveals that there are no
other explicit parameter constructions in the codebase. All existing
unit tests pass.
Now that we're adding support for the Discourse plugin, we'll start
having >1 plugin present in the frontend again. As such, we should
provide clear grouping of types in the frontend so that it's possible to
distinguish between a GitHub user and a Discourse user. This commit does
just that, by resurrecting code that we used when the GitHub and Git
plugins co-existed in the frontend.
Test plan: Launch the fronted and observe that node types in the filter
selection dropdown are grouped by the name of their plugin. Also,
clicking on the name of a plugin should filter to all nodes from that
plugin.
Now instead of always defaulting to GitHub users, it shows all
user-typed nodes. This will make SourceCred work non-hackily when there
is e.g. just a Discourse plugin in scope.
I also fixed an issue where it was loading the GitHub declaration in a
hardcoded way, instead of properly getting it from the TimelineCred's
plugin array.
Test plan: Manual UI inspection.
This lets us filter by a group of prefixes simultaneously, which enables
e.g. seeing all user node types at once.
I also tweaked the API to make it a bit more convenient, you can now
pass no arguments and get all nodes in sorted order.
Test plan: Unit tests updated.
The PluginDeclaration has all of the information we need to configure
TimelineCred: it knows all the node and edge types, as well as which
node types are user (or scoring) node types.
Therefore, we can replace the ad-hoc config object with a simple array
of plugin declarations. Since the plugins will be saved as part of the
TimelineCred, it means the UI can configure to only show information for
plugins that are actually in scope.
Test plan: `yarn test` passes, and the prototype still works. Snapshots
updated.
This updates the cred computation logic so that we can have multiple
"scoring node types".
Context: Currently, we designate a single node type (GitHub users) as
the scoring node type, and normalize so that all users have 1000 score
in total.
This commit updates the pipeline to admit using more than one prefix for
scoring, meaning that we could have GitHub users, Discourse users, and
more, and still have all users sum to 1000 score.
We will still need to update the frontend so that it will have a user
pane which aggregates across all users.
Test plan: Unit tests updated. `yarn test` passes.
This changes how TimelineCred filtering works. Instead of using the
filterTimelineCred module, which includes all nodes matching
filterPrefixes, we now take all nodes matching scorePrefixes and
additionally the top `k` nodes for every other type.
This ensures that we will have the top comments, pull requests, issues,
etc in the UI, without needing to take every single comment or PR or
issue.
Concurrently, the UI is updated so that every type is included in the
filter dropdown.
CHANGELOG has been updated, since this is user facing.
Test plan: `yarn test` passes, snapshots are updated, and I also tested
the UI manually.
TimelineCred computation is implemented as follows:
- Compute Distribution
- Filter it down to specified node types
- Wrap the filtered results into a TimelineCred
I want to change how the filtering works. The new filtering logic will
depend on logic we've already implemented in TimelineCred; therefore
filtering should be done on the TimelineCred object and not separately.
Specifically, I want to be able to filter down to the highest-scored
nodes by type (dependent on the type).
As a first step, I've refactored the interface to TimelineCred so that
the filtering is an implementation detail, i.e. the TimelineCred
constructor doesn't expect objects defined in `filterTimelineCred`.
Test plan: `yarn test` passes after a snapshot update.
This modifies the TimelineCred serialization so that it includes the
CredConfig in the JSON. This means that it's easier to coordinate which
plugins and types are in scope, as the data itself can contain that
information.
Rather than define a new hand-rolled serializer, I just passed the
config directly through for stringification. Unit tests verify that this
still works (round-trip serialization is tested). As an added sanity
check, I generated a new small `cred.json`, and inspected the file via
`cat` to ensure that it's still legible text, and isn't interpreted as a
binary file due to the `NUL` bytes in node addresses.
Every client that previously depended on the `DEFAULT_CRED_CONFIG` now
properly gets its cred configuration from the JSON.
Test plan: Unit tests for serialization already exist. Generated a fresh
`cred.json` file and tested the frontend with it. Also,
`yarn test --full` passes.
Summary:
All links in SourceCred must use the `Link` component, providing either
an external URL `href={…}` or an internal route `to={…}`. Any uses of a
raw `<a>` element for internal routes will incur 404s when the
application is hosted on a non-root path, as is currently the case on
the production website.
The change to `FileUploader` is not strictly necessary, as the link has
no styled text and uses a `data:` URL, but there’s no reason not to.
Fixes#1304.
Test Plan:
Build the static site:

change, it would navigate to a URL without the proper `/cred/` path

mode” link has the same properties.
Then, visit <http://localhost:8000/cred/test/FileUploader/> and verify
that the inspection test still passes.
Added a regression test to catch further such errors. Note that
reverting the code changes in this commit causes the test to fail, and
that running it with `--verbose` prints the problematic files.
wchargin-branch: fix-bad-routing-404s
Summary:
This is firing on a production page load of the “prototype” link from
the homepage, and does not seem to actually be an error condition.
Test Plan:
Run `yarn start`, navigate to `/timeline/sourcecred/example-github/`,
and observe that the console error has disappeared.

The code is mostly ported from the legacy app. However, we no longer
assume that we are showing every type for every plugin. Instead, the
types are manually selected. For now, we permit the GitHub user type,
and the GitHub repo type, as these are the two types that are included
in filtered timeline cred.
Test plan: Manual inspection is necessary, since this frontend is mostly
untested. I've done that inspection. Also, `yarn test` passes.
This commit removes the `pagerank` and `analyze` commands (both of which
never saw real usage), removes the outdated adapter-based `loadGraph`
method, and removes all traces of the analysis adapters.
It builds on work in #1233 and #1136.
Test plan: `yarn test --full` passes.
This commit swaps usage over to the new implementation of `cli/load`
(the one that wraps `api/load`) and makes changes throughout the project
to accomodate that we now track instances by Project rather than by
RepoId.
Test plan: Unit tests updated; run `yarn test --full`. Also, for safety:
actually load a project (by whole org, why not) and verify that the
frontend still works.
Throughout the codebase, we freeze objects when we want to ensure that
their properties are never altered -- e.g. because they are a plugin
declaration, or are being re-used for various test cases.
We generally use `Object.freeze`. This has the disadvantage that it does
not work recursively, so a frozen object's mutable fields and properties
can still be mutated. (E.g. if `const obj = Object.freeze({foo: []})`,
then `obj.foo.push(1)` will succeed in mutating the 'frozen' object).
Sometimes we anticipate this and explicitly freeze the sub-fields (which
is tedious); sometimes we forget (which invites errors). This change
simply replaces all instances of Object.freeze with [deep-freeze], so we
don't need to worry about the issue at all anymore.
Test plan: `yarn test` passes (after updating snapshots);
`git grep Object.freeze` returns no hits.

Prior to #1136, we needed an `ExplorerAdapter` abstraction to get node
description data to the frontend. Now that it's included in the graph,
we can throw away this abstraction, which is a big step towards plugin
simplification (work towards #1120).
Since it only affects a deprecated/legacy part of the code base, I
didn't put much effort into making the result super clean. I also
removed a few tests that became inconvenient.
Test plan: Verified that the legacy frontend still works. There's one
tiny regression, which is that the link color in the legacy frontend no
longer matches the rest of the UI, but that's actually consistent with
the timeline frontend, so no biggie.
`yarn test` passes.
As of this commit, the main SourceCred prototypes page now links to
timeline cred, meaning that timeline cred is now live. I've added a
link from the legacy explorer to the timeline explorer (which already
has a link out to the legacy explorer).
Test plan: Careful inspection of the frontend by the committer.
Also, yarn test.
This is a bulk rename of all the old explorer code into
`explorer/legacy`. Now that the timeline explorer exists, I intend to
prioritize development on that going forwards. Once the timeline
explorer is as good as the old explorer at decomposing a node's sources
of cred, I will remove the legacy explorer entirely.

This commit adds a TimelineExplorer for visualizing timeline cred data.
The centerpiece is the TimelineCredChart, a d3-based line chart showing
how the top users' cred evolved over time. It has features like tooltips,
reasonable ticks on the x axis, a legend, and filtering out line
segments that stay on the x axis.
An inspection test is included, which you can check out here:

This commit also includes new dependencies:
- recharts (for the charts)

Test plan: The frontend code is mostly untested, in keeping with my
observation that the costs of testing the old explorer were really high,
and the tests brought little benefit. However, I have manually tested it
thoroughly. Also, there is an inspection test for the TimelineCredView
(see above).
This commit resolves an inconsistency where we called edge weights
`toWeight` and `froWeight` in the core/attribution module, but
`forwards` and `backwards` in the analysis module.
I changed field names in the PagerankGraph JSON, so I bumped its compat.
Test plan: `yarn test --full` passes.
This commit updates eslint from v4 to v6. In doing so, I've moved off of
the create-react-app base eslint config. We were on an old version (v2)
and it doesn't make sense to update to v4, as in v4 create-react-app
uses typescript. Also, it didn't make sense to stay on
create-react-app's v2 config, because then it had unmet peer dependency
constraints on old versions of eslint.
Instead, I've moved us to use the default rules for eslint,
eslint-plugin-react, and eslint-plugin-flowtype.
I also made some changes to the codebase to satisfy the new lint rules
that came with this change.
Test plan: `yarn test` passes.
This necessitated a number of type fixes:
- Upgraded the express flow-typed file to latest
- Added manual flow error suppression to where the express flow-typed
file is still using a deprecated utility type
- Removed type polymorphism support on map.merge (see context here[1]).
We weren't using the polymorphism anywhere so I figured it was simplest
to just remove it.
- Improve typing around jest mocks throughout the codebase.
Test plan: `yarn test --full` passes.

This commit updates our prettier version from `1.13` to `1.18`. Looks
like software does get better over time! I like all of the changes.
Test plan: `yarn test` passes. I've manually inspected the diffs.
This commit modifies the base `Graph` class so that nodes are now
represented by `Node` objects rather than `NodeAddressT`. The intention
is to start adding additional fields (e.g. description and timestamp) to
nodes, although that is not included in this commit.
See #1136 for rationale.
Test plan: The graph is very well tested, and this commit adds
additional tests and invariant checking. Some additional test code
needed update. `yarn test --full` passes, and the SourceCred UI works as
expected.
This adds a WeightsFileManager component that allows the user to save or
load weights in the cred explorer. Clicking the download icon downloads
the weights, clicking the upload icon uploads them.
I also did a slight refactor to the FileUploader so that it no longer
always provides the file upload icon, instead the instantiator passes
children which act as the upload clickable. Seemed more consistent.
Test plan: No tests added, but I manually tested that upload and
download both work.
This commit refactors the `analysis/weights` module so that there's
a single top-level type called `Weights` which includes all of the
user-specified weights for running PageRank. This includes both manually
specified type weights, and per-node weights.
In contrast to the old weights module which had weighted types (i.e. the
type bundled with the weight), this only records the weight choice
(keyed by address). Similarly, the map is empty unless the user has
explicitly chosen a weight. This has a few advantages:
- For planned work on serializing weights, it's convenient that
there's a single unified object that bundles all the weights.
- For planned work on serializing weights, it's convenient that we only
record actual choices, not the default values (defaults are provided
within the WeightsToEdgeEvaluator). This way, we don't need to manually
filter out the default weights for serialization. (We want users who
have not made any choice about the type weights to automatically get new
type weightings we publish in sourcecred/sourcecred).
- Overall, the WeightConfig data piping has become a lot simpler.
While making these changes, I threw away the PluginWeightConfig
component, instead inlining it in the top-level WeightConfig. I also
moved responsibility for the WeightConfig out of the PagerankTable, and
into the containing App; the WeightConfig is created and wired by the
App, and then passed as a whole component into the PagerankTable via
props. This means that PagerankTable does not need to get a bunch of
extra props for piping the state changes into WeightConfig.
I also threw away some frontend test code for the WeightConfig
component. Over the course of the past few months, I've observed that
the value of a lot of the frontend-wiring-testing is pretty low (i.e.
they are not catching issues, because Flow catches them) and the cost of
maintaining the testing is high. I'm now inclined to believe that we
shouldn't be testing routine component wiring via explicit tests,
because it's very easy to verify that the behavior is correct by
interacting with the UI, and the tests are expensive to write and
maintain.
For "core logic" (e.g. behaviors of types and data structures,
algorithms, etc) I continue to believe testing is very valuable. One
heuristic I'll start applying is: "can I achieve high confidence that
this code is correct, without tests, using little effort by manually
inspecting the frontend?". If the answer is yes, I'm unlikely to write
tests.
Test plan: `yarn test` passes, and the UI continues to function,
including changing manual and type level weights and observing cred
changes.
Node and Edge types are increasingly important in SourceCred, as we use
them to decide what weights to provide, what description logic to use,
etc. In #631, we hit a bug around not finding a type matching a
particular node, and in #640 I responded by creating a
"FallbackAdapter", which matches any node, and a
"Static/DynamicAdapterSet", which are abstractions for finding adapters
in a way that guarantees the presence of the fallback adapter.
I think this solution is actually pretty brittle. It only works if we
are disciplined in only ever accessing node and edge types using a
context that included the FallbackAdapter, and it requires us to
centralize all of the "type-not-found" logic in one place (the fallback
declaration) irrespective of what the locally appropriate solution is.
Looking back at #631, the core issue was that we had a getter that
promised to always give a matching type and adapter, rather than
returning a possibly undefined adapter. We fixed this by attempting to
ensure that there always would be a matching adapter. I think it would
be better to have the methods honestly report that the adapter might be
null/undefined, and let the client code handle it appropriately.
This commit implements that change. It's motivated by me being
frustrated at the fallback adapter while doing other refactoring.
Test plan:
Unit tests have been updated and `yarn test` passes. Also, I
experimentally removed the Git plugin from the list of adapters for both
the backend and frontend, and verified that the frontend UI and the
pagerank and export-graph commands still worked.
This refactors the weights module (and downstream consumers) so that
rather than tracking forwardWeight and backwardsWeight as separate
fields, we have an `EdgeWeight` type with a forwards and backwards
property. I feel this makes the code a little cleaner and wanted it a
few times while doing other refactors in this module.
Note that the graphToMarkovChain module has a distinct `EdgeWeight` type
which serves a similar purpose but happens to have different field
names. I've added a TODO to rename those fields for consistency.
Test plan: Since this is slight data structure re-organization, no new
tests are required; that `yarn test` passes is sufficient.
This pull request adds a weight slider to every NodeRow in the explorer,
enabling the user to manually set a weight for that node. The weights are
multiplicative with the type level weights, so that they can be changed
independently (e.g. you can have a comment that is weighted 2x higher than
regular comments, but still have comments get a low weight in general).
This pull coordinates a number of different changes across the codebase, all of
which are tested:
Adding support for manual weights in the weights and
weightsToEdgeEvaluator modules.
Modifying pagerankTable.TableRow so that it can show a slider in the second
column.
Adding piping for manual weights into the PagerankTable shared props, and
into the explorer app
Adding the slider to the NodeRow class that displays the current weight,
and can trigger the upstream weight change
Ensuring that the runPagerank call in the explorer actually uses the manual
weights
At present, there is no way to save these weights (they are ephemeral in the
frontend) and so this is clearly a prototype/tech demo level feature rather
than being ready for real usage. Correspondingly, CLI pagerank command always
uses an empty set of manual weights. I plan to remedy this in a follow-on pull
request.
Test plan: Run the included unit tests (yarn test) and also spin up the UI,
verify that it visually looks good in both Firefox and Chrome, and verify that
changing the weights and then re-running PageRank actually causes the cred of
the modified node to change.
Review plan: In addition to carefully reading the code, ensure that all of the
changes described a few paragraphs up are actually tested.
Merge plan: Squash and merge.

The motivation for this change is to make it easier
to access the selected Node's `name` prop for #576,
in which we plan to show a Card displaying summary
stats for the selected node. With only the `topLevelFilter`
available, it's trickier than it needs to be to find out
a node type's `name`.
Test Plan:
* Yarn test passes.
* Visual/Manual inspection of table doesn't surface any issues.
* Updated `it("filter defaults to defaultNodeFilter if available")`
to `it("selectedNodeType defaults to defaultNodeType if available")`.
* Verified that the above new test is failable in several ways by
mangling the tests to test for the wrong node type and mangling the
code to set the wrong node type.
* Since we factored out 'topLevelFilter' and 'defaultNodeFilter',
running `git grep -i topLevelFilter` and `git grep -i defaultNodeFilter`
turns up empty, just to make sure those terms aren't hanging
around to confuse anybody in the future.
* I don't think changing the `prop` parameter warrants any
additional tests, as the current tests verify that the prop
is passed in correctly.
This was at @decentralion's suggestion, following the Contributing
Guideline's Kent Beck quote of making the easy change to make the
change we were originally after (#576) easier. 🙌
* Highlight tableRows on :hover and :focus-within
Resolves#1041
The purpose of this commit is to make the pagerankTable easier
to read, as it's currently difficult to distinguish which score is
associated with which row because of the tight spacing of the
rows and the space between the score column and the row detail column.
@wchargin provided the implementation using `linearGradient()`
and `backgroundImage`s.
A side effect of highlighting the row on `focus-within` is that the rows
will become highlighted when the expand button is clicked, which we
decided was acceptable.
Test plan:
Yarn test passes.
To test the new highlight behavior, visual/manual inspection
passes.
Also added the Aphrodite className to the snapshot
tests. The combination of testing the className + inline style props
should make these tests sensitive to UI changes in the future.

* bump CI
Pull #1080 added in a description field for edge types, but put in a
placeholder message for each actual description. This pull adds in
descriptions for each edge type.
Test plan: `yarn test` passes, and additionally
`git grep 'TODO: Add a description for this edge type'` returns no hits.

This commit #811, allowing users to set the weights of node/edge types to 0.
The WeightSlider now sets the weight to 0 when its dragged to its minimum value.
The logic for converting between weights and sliders has also been made more robust,
and is more thoroughly tested.
In cases where we wanted to set the weight to 0 (e.g. backwards Reaction edges),
the default weight has been changed.
Test plan:
Loading the UI, check that the sliders still work as expected (dragging them changes the displayed weight, dragging to the far left sets weight to 0). Check that the weights are consumed as expected (setting weight for issues to 0 leads to no cred for issues). Check that the weights for backwards reaction edges now have 0 weight. `git grep "TODO(#811)"` returns no hits.
