When there are long periods of non-finality, `nodeIsViableForHead` has
been observed to consume significant time as it repeatedly walks the
non-finalized check graph as part of determining what heads are eligible
for fork choice. Caching the result resolves that.
Overall, it may still be better to prune fork choice more aggressively
when finality advances, to fully avoid the case specced out using the
linear scan. The current implementation is very close to spec, though,
so such a change should not be introduced without thorough testing.
The simple cache should allow significantly better performance on Goerli
while the network is still supported (Mid April).
We currently compute `justified_total_active_balance` inside
`calculateProposerBoost`, despite that sum already being known
in the `EpochRef` cache. Tracking `justified_total_active_balance`
whenever the justified checkpoint updates allows replacing the
repeated computation with a lookup, at minimal memory cost.
To allow testing https://github.com/ethereum/consensus-specs/issues/3466
add support for selecting fork choice version at launch. This means we
can deploy a different logic when `DENEB_FORK_EPOCH != FAR_FUTURE_EPOCH`
that won't be used on Mainnet.
The consensus-spec-tests already cover the scenarios of our custom test
runner, so the custom tests can be removed. Also cleans up unused config
flags and related unreachable logic.
Extends fork choice state to also track slot numbers to improve accuracy
of `/eth/v1/debug/fork_choice` endpoint. Autoenable this API on devnet,
and disable some extra checks on devnet to aid focused testing efforts.
Align fork choice pruning logic with API based on checkpoints vs root.
* detect mismatch of config and binary
When loading configuration that sets keys that Nimbus bakes into the
binary at compile-time, raise an error if the config is incompatible
instead of ignoring the conflicting value.
Removes a few extra-ambitious templates to make `self` updates explicit,
and moves the `FinalityCheckpoints` type from `base` to `helpers` as it
is an additional Nimbus specific type not defined by spec.
The justified and finalized `Checkpoint` are frequently passed around
together. This introduces a new `FinalityCheckpoint` data structure that
combines them into one.
Due to the large usage of this structure in fork choice, also took this
opportunity to update fork choice tests to the latest v1.2.0-rc.1 spec.
Many additional tests enabled, some need more work, e.g. EL mock blocks.
Also implemented `discard_equivocations` which was skipped in #3661,
and improved code reuse across fork choice logic while at it.
Updated outdated presets / configs / REST config to v1.1.10 specs.
- `TERMINAL_BLOCK_HASH_ACTIVATION_EPOCH` and `PROPOSER_SCORE_BOOST` are
not yet used in `eth2-networks`, added configurability as TODOs.
- `MIN_ANCHOR_POW_BLOCK_DIFFICULTY` is no longer needed, put on ignore
list as some Altair devnets still reference it.
Some upstream repos still need fixes, but this gets us close enough that
style hints can be enabled by default.
In general, "canonical" spellings are preferred even if they violate
nep-1 - this applies in particular to spec-related stuff like
`genesis_validators_root` which appears throughout the codebase.

The spec imports are a mess to work with, so this branch cleans them up
a bit to ensure that we avoid generic sandwitches and that importing
stuff generally becomes easier.
* reexport crypto/digest/presets because these are part of the public
symbol set of the rest of the spec types
* don't export `merge` types from `base` - this causes circular deps
* fix circular deps in `ssz/spec_types` - this is the first step in
disentangling ssz from spec
* be explicit about phase0 vs altair - longer term, `altair` will become
the "natural" type set, then merge and so on, so no point in giving
