replace `optimisticRoots` table with field in `BlockRef` (#4969)
* replace optimisticRoots table with field in BlockRef

* copyright year

* mark finalized blocks as verified on load

* Update beacon_chain/consensus_object_pools/block_dag.nim

Co-authored-by: Etan Kissling <etan@status.im>

* expand non-optimistic block checking to all pre-merge blocks; refactor markBlockVerified to use BlockRef rather than block root and remove superfluous caller in newPayload path replaced by addResolvedHeadBlock BlockRef construction

* don't treat finalized block specially; VALID status is sticky

Fix sync for blocks older than MIN_EPOCHS_FOR_BLOB_SIDECARS_REQUESTS (#4977)
When doing sync for blocks older than
MIN_EPOCHS_FOR_BLOB_SIDECARS_REQUESTS, we skip the blobs by range
request, but we then pass en empty blob sequence to
validation, which then fails.

To fix this: Use an Option[Blobsidecars] to allow expressing the
distinction between "empty blob sequence" and "blobs unavailable". Use
the latter for "old" blocks, and don't attempt to run blob validation.

segregate sync committee messages by period / fork (#4953)
`SyncCommitteeMsgPool` grouped messages by their `beacon_block_root`.
This is problematic around sync committee period boundaries and forks.
Around sync committee period boundaries, members from both the current
and next sync committee may sign the same `beacon_block_root`; mixing
the signatures from both committees together is a mistake. Likewise,
around fork transitions, the `signing_root` changes, so those messages
also need to be segregated.

Incremental pruning (#4887)
* Incremental pruning

When turning on pruning the first time the current pruning algorithm
will prune the full database at startup. This delays restart
unnecessarily, since all of the pruned space is not needed at once.

This PR introduces incremental pruning such that we will never prune
more than 32 blocks or the sync speed, whichever is higher.

This mode is expected to become default in a follow-up release.

Request manager: Handle blobless blocks (#4833)
Post-Deneb, when the request manager receives a missing block from a
peer, it needs to check if the corresponding blobs are available, and
if so pass them along. If they aren't available, the newly-fetched
block must be put in blobless quarantine (while the blobs are
retrieved, coming in next commit).

allow trusted node sync based on LC trusted block root (#4736)
* allow trusted node sync based on LC trusted block root

Extends `trustedNodeSync` with a new `--trusted-block-root` option that
allows initializing a light client. No `--state-id` must be provided.
The beacon node will then use this light client to obtain the latest
finalized state from the remote server in a trust-minimized fashion.
Note that the provided `--trusted-block-root` should be somewhat recent,
and that security precautions such as comparing the state root against
block explorers is still recommended.

Support for driving multiple EL nodes from a single Nimbus BN (#4465)
* Support for driving multiple EL nodes from a single Nimbus BN

Full list of changes:

* Eth1Monitor has been renamed to ELManager to match its current
  responsibilities better.

* The ELManager is no longer optional in the code (it won't have
  a nil value under any circumstances).

* The support for subscribing for headers was removed as it only
  worked with WebSockets and contributed significant complexity
  while bringing only a very minor advantage.

* The `--web3-url` parameter has been deprecated in favor of a
  new `--el` parameter. The new parameter has a reasonable default
  value and supports specifying a different JWT for each connection.
  Each connection can also be configured with a different set of
  responsibilities (e.g. download deposits, validate blocks and/or
  produce blocks). On the command-line, these properties can be
  configured through URL properties stored in the #anchor part of
  the URL. In TOML files, they come with a very natural syntax
  (althrough the URL scheme is also supported).

* The previously scattered EL-related state and logic is now moved
  to `eth1_monitor.nim` (this module will be renamed to `el_manager.nim`
  in a follow-up commit). State is assigned properly either to the
  `ELManager` or the to individual `ELConnection` objects where
  appropriate.

  The ELManager executes all Engine API requests against all attached
  EL nodes, in parallel. It compares their results and if there is a
  disagreement regarding the validity of a certain payload, this is
  detected and the beacon node is protected from publishing a block
  with a potential execution layer consensus bug in it.

  The BN provides metrics per EL node for the number of successful or
  failed requests for each type Engine API requests. If an EL node
  goes offline and connectivity is resoted later, we report the
  problem and the remedy in edge-triggered fashion.

* More progress towards implementing Deneb block production in the VC
  and comparing the value of blocks produced by the EL and the builder
  API.

* Adds a Makefile target for the zhejiang testnet

Local sim impovements (#4551)
* Local sim impovements

* Added support for running Capella and EIP-4844 simulations
  by downloading the correct version of Geth.

* Added support for using Nimbus remote signer and Web3Signer.
  Use 2 out of 3 threshold signing configuration in the mainnet
  configuration and regular remote signing in the minimal one.

* The local testnet simulation can now use a payload builder.
  This is currently not activated in CI due to lack of automated
  procedures for installing third-party relays or builders.

  You are adviced to use mergemock for now, but for most realistic
  results, we can create a simple builder based on the nimbus-eth1
  codebase that will be able to propose transactions from the regular
  network mempool.

* Start the simulation from a merged state. This would allow us
  to start removing pre-merge functionality such as the gossip
  subsciption logic. The commit also removes the merge-forcing
  hack installed after the TTD removal.

* Consolidate all the tools used in the local simulation into a
  single `ncli_testnet` binary.

Skip execution payload verification for finalized blocks (#4591)
While syncing the finalized portion of the chain, the execution client
cannot efficiently sync and most of the time returns `SYNCING` - in this
PR, we use CL-verified optmistic sync as long as the block is claimed to
be finalized, only occasionally updating the EL with progress.

Although a peer might lie about what is finalized and what isn't,
eventually we'll call the execution client - thus, all a dishonest
client can do is delay execution verification slightly. Gossip blocks in
particular are never assumed to be finalized.

Enable validator monitor by default (#4468)
By enabling the validator monitor, more precise information about the
lifecycle of an attestation is logged at the higher `NOTICE` log level
while current `sent` messages are logged at `INF` instead, since they
are less interesting.

In particular, missed attestations and those that vote for the wrong
head are now detected and logged at NOTICE.

In addition to logging, this feature enables rich metrics around
attestation and sync committee performance - by default, validators are
tracked in aggregate but a detailed mode exists as well

This feature has been available since early Nimbus days, but it has now
been tuned and optimised such that it is safe to enable by default, even
for large setups.

* enable automatic validator monitoring by default
* replace `--validator-monitor-totals` flag with
`--validator-monitor-details` - the detailed mode is disabled by default
* lower "sent" log level to `INF` for several messages - in particular
those that are traced by the validator monitor

This is a retake on #3531 which was later reverted in #3578.

History pruning (fixes #4419) (#4445)
Introduce (optional) pruning of historical data - a pruned node will
continue to answer queries for historical data up to
`MIN_EPOCHS_FOR_BLOCK_REQUESTS` epochs, or roughly 5 months, capping
typical database usage at around 60-70gb.

To enable pruning, add `--history=prune` to the command line - on the
first start, old data will be cleared (which may take a while) - after
that, data is pruned continuously.

When pruning an existing database, the database will not shrink -
instead, the freed space is recycled as the node continues to run - to
free up space, perform a trusted node sync with a fresh database.

When switching on archive mode in a pruned node, history is retained
from that point onwards.

History pruning is scheduled to be enabled by default in a future
release.

In this PR, `minimal` mode from #4419 is not implemented meaning
retention periods for states and blocks are always the same - depending
on user demand, a future PR may implement `minimal` as well.

Always-on optimistic mode (#4458)
With https://github.com/status-im/nimbus-eth2/pull/4420 implemented, the
checks that we perform are equivalent to those of a `SYNCING` EL - as
such, we can treat missing EL the same as SYNCING and proceed with an
optimistic sync.

This mode of operation significantly speeds up recovery after an offline
EL event because the CL is already synced and can immediately inform the
EL of the latest head.

It also allows using a beacon node for consensus archival queries
without an execution client.

* deprecate `--optimistic` flag
* log block details on EL error, soften log level because we can now
continue to operate
* `UnviableFork` -> `Invalid` when block hash verification fails -
failed hash verification is not a fork-related block issue

Backfill only up to MIN_EPOCHS_FOR_BLOCK_REQUESTS blocks (#4421)
When backfilling, we only need to download blocks that are newer than
MIN_EPOCHS_FOR_BLOCK_REQUESTS - the rest cannot reliably be fetched from
the network and does not have to be provided to others.

This change affects only trusted-node-synced clients - genesis sync
continues to work as before (because it needs to construct a state by
building it from genesis).

Those wishing to complete a backfill should do so with era files
instead.

State-only checkpoint state startup (#4251)
Currently, we require genesis and a checkpoint block and state to start
from an arbitrary slot - this PR relaxes this requirement so that we can
start with a state alone.

The current trusted-node-sync algorithm works by first downloading
blocks until we find an epoch aligned non-empty slot, then downloads the
state via slot.

However, current
[proposals](https://github.com/ethereum/beacon-APIs/pull/226) for
checkpointing prefer finalized state as
the main reference - this allows more simple access control and caching
on the server side - in particular, this should help checkpoint-syncing
from sources that have a fast `finalized` state download (like infura
and teku) but are slow when accessing state via slot.

Earlier versions of Nimbus will not be able to read databases created
without a checkpoint block and genesis. In most cases, backfilling makes
the database compatible except where genesis is also missing (custom
networks).

* backfill checkpoint block from libp2p instead of checkpoint source,
when doing trusted node sync
* allow starting the client without genesis / checkpoint block
* perform epoch start slot lookahead when loading tail state, so as to
deal with the case where the epoch start slot does not have a block
* replace `--blockId` with `--state-id` in TNS command line
* when replaying, also look at the parent of the last-known-block (even
if we don't have the parent block data, we can still replay from a
"parent" state) - in particular, this clears the way for implementing
state pruning
* deprecate `--finalized-checkpoint-block` option (no longer needed)

The `eth1_monitor` check to require engine API from bellatrix onward
has issues in setups where the EL and CL are started simultaneously
because the EL may not be ready to answer requests by the time that the

using Besu as the EL client. Now that the merge transition happened, the
check is also not that useful anymore, as users have other ways to know

accelerate EL sync with LC with `--sync-light-client` (#4041)
When the BN-embedded LC makes sync progress, pass the corresponding
execution block hash to the EL via `engine_forkchoiceUpdatedV1`.
This allows the EL to sync to wall slot while the chain DAG is behind.
Renamed `--light-client` to `--sync-light-client` for clarity, and
`--light-client-trusted-block-root` to `--trusted-block-root` for
consistency with `nimbus_light_client`.

Note that this does not work well in practice at this time:
- Geth sticks to the optimistic sync:
  "Ignoring payload while snap syncing" (when passing the LC head)
  "Forkchoice requested unknown head" (when updating to LC head)
- Nethermind syncs to LC head but does not report ancestors as VALID,
  so the main forward sync is still stuck in optimistic mode:
  "Pre-pivot block, ignored and returned Syncing"

To aid EL client teams in fixing those issues, having this available
as a hidden option is still useful.

reduce LC optsync latency (#4002)
The optimistic sync spec was updated since the LC based optsync module
was introduced. It is no longer necessary to wait for the justified
checkpoint to have execution enabled; instead, any block is okay to be
optimistically imported to the EL client, as long as its parent block
has execution enabled. Complex syncing logic has been removed, and the
LC optsync module will now follow gossip directly, reducing the latency
when using this module. Note that because this is now based on gossip
instead of using sync manager / request manager, that individual blocks
may be missed. However, EL clients should recover from this by fetching
missing blocks themselves.

era: load blocks and states (#3394)
* era: load blocks and states

Era files contain finalized history and can be thought of as an
alternative source for block and state data that allows clients to avoid
syncing this information from the P2P network - the P2P network is then
used to "top up" the client with the most recent data. They can be
freely shared in the community via whatever means (http, torrent, etc)
and serve as a permanent cold store of consensus data (and, after the
merge, execution data) for history buffs and bean counters alike.

This PR gently introduces support for loading blocks and states in two
cases: block requests from rest/p2p and frontfilling when doing
checkpoint sync.

The era files are used as a secondary source if the information is not
found in the database - compared to the database, there are a few key
differences:

* the database stores the block indexed by block root while the era file
indexes by slot - the former is used only in rest, while the latter is
used both by p2p and rest.
* when loading blocks from era files, the root is no longer trivially
available - if it is needed, it must either be computed (slow) or cached
(messy) - the good news is that for p2p requests, it is not needed
* in era files, "framed" snappy encoding is used while in the database
we store unframed snappy - for p2p2 requests, the latter requires
recompression while the former could avoid it
* front-filling is the process of using era files to replace backfilling
- in theory this front-filling could happen from any block and
front-fills with gaps could also be entertained, but our backfilling
algorithm cannot take advantage of this because there's no (simple) way
to tell it to "skip" a range.
* front-filling, as implemented, is a bit slow (10s to load mainnet): we
load the full BeaconState for every era to grab the roots of the blocks
- it would be better to partially load the state - as such, it would
also be good to be able to partially decompress snappy blobs
* lookups from REST via root are served by first looking up a block
summary in the database, then using the slot to load the block data from
the era file - however, there needs to be an option to create the
summary table from era files to fully support historical queries

To test this, `ncli_db` has an era file exporter: the files it creates
should be placed in an `era` folder next to `db` in the data directory.
What's interesting in particular about this setup is that `db` remains
as the source of truth for security purposes - it stores the latest
synced head root which in turn determines where a node "starts" its
consensus participation - the era directory however can be freely shared
between nodes / people without any (significant) security implications,
assuming the era files are consistent / not broken.

There's lots of future improvements to be had:

* we can drop the in-memory `BlockRef` index almost entirely - at this
point, resident memory usage of Nimbus should drop to a cool 500-600 mb
* we could serve era files via REST trivially: this would drop backfill
times to whatever time it takes to download the files - unlike the
current implementation that downloads block by block, downloading an era
at a time almost entirely cuts out request overhead
* we can "reasonably" recreate detailed state history from almost any
point in time, turning an O(slot) process into O(1) effectively - we'll
still need caches and indices to do this with sufficient efficiency for
the rest api, but at least it cuts the whole process down to minutes
instead of hours, for arbitrary points in time

* CI: ignore failures with Nim-1.6 (temporary)

* test fixes

remove StateData (#3507)
One more step on the journey to reduce `BlockRef` usage across the
codebase - this one gets rid of `StateData` whose job was to keep track
of which block was last assigned to a state - these duties have now been
taken over by `latest_block_root`, a fairly recent addition that
computes this block root from state data (at a small cost that should be
insignificant)

Store finalized block roots in database (3s startup) (#3320)
* Store finalized block roots in database (3s startup)

When the chain has finalized a checkpoint, the history from that point
onwards becomes linear - this is exploited in `.era` files to allow
constant-time by-slot lookups.

In the database, we can do the same by storing finalized block roots in
a simple sparse table indexed by slot, bringing the two representations
closer to each other in terms of conceptual layout and performance.

Doing so has a number of interesting effects:

* mainnet startup time is improved 3-5x (3s on my laptop)
* the _first_ startup might take slightly longer as the new index is
being built - ~10s on the same laptop
* we no longer rely on the beacon block summaries to load the full dag -
this is a lot faster because we no longer have to look up each block by
parent root
* a collateral benefit is that we no longer need to load the full
summaries table into memory - we get the RSS benefits of #3164 without
the CPU hit.

Other random stuff:

* simplify forky block generics
* fix withManyWrites multiple evaluation
* fix validator key cache not being updated properly in chaindag
read-only mode
* drop pre-altair summaries from `kvstore`
* recreate missing summaries from altair+ blocks as well (in case
database has lost some to an involuntary restart)
* print database startup timings in chaindag load log
* avoid allocating superfluos state at startup
* use a recursive sql query to load the summaries of the unfinalized
blocks

Backfiller (#3263)
Backfilling is the process of downloading historical blocks via P2P that
are required to fulfill `GetBlocksByRange` duties - this happens during
both trusted node and finalized checkpoint syncs.

In particular, backfilling happens after syncing to head, such that
attestation work can start as soon as possible.

* Fix SyncQueue initialization procedure.
Remove usage of `awaitne`.
Add cancellation support.
Remove unneeded `sleepAsync()` if peer's head is older than needed.
Add `direction` field to all logs.
Fix syncmanager wedge issue.

Trusted node sync (#3209)
* Trusted node sync

Trusted node sync, aka checkpoint sync, allows syncing tyhe chain from a
trusted node instead of relying on a full sync from genesis.

Features include:

* sync from any slot, including the latest finalized slot
* backfill blocks either from the REST api (default) or p2p (#3263)

Future improvements:

* top up blocks between head in database and some other node - this
makes for an efficient backup tool
* recreate historical state to enable historical queries

* fixes

* load genesis from network metadata
* check checkpoint block root against state
* fix invalid block root in rest json decoding
* odds and ends

* retry looking for epoch-boundary checkpoint blocks

use tail block as sync pivot (#3276)
When syncing, we show how much of the sync has completed - with
checkpoint sync, the syncing does not always go from slot 0 to head, but
rather can start in the middle.

To show a consistent `%` between restarts, we introduce the concept of a
pivot point, such that if I sync 10% of the chain, then restart the
client, it picks up at 10% (instead of counting from 0).

What it looks like:
```
INF ... sync="01d12h41m (15.96%) 13.5158slots/s (QDDQDDQQDP:339018)" ...
```

time: spring cleaning (#3262)
Time in the beacon chain is expressed relative to the genesis time -
this PR creates a `beacon_time` module that collects helpers and
utilities for dealing the time units - the new module does not deal with
actual wall time (that's remains in `beacon_clock`).

Collecting the time related stuff in one place makes it easier to find,
avoids some circular imports and allows more easily identifying the code
actually needs wall time to operate.

* move genesis-time-related functionality into `spec/beacon_time`
* avoid using `chronos.Duration` for time differences - it does not
support negative values (such as when something happens earlier than it
should)
* saturate conversions between `FAR_FUTURE_XXX`, so as to avoid
overflows
* fix delay reporting in validator client so it uses the expected
deadline of the slot, not "closest wall slot"
* simplify looping over the slots of an epoch
* `compute_start_slot_at_epoch` -> `start_slot`
* `compute_epoch_at_slot` -> `epoch`

A follow-up PR will (likely) introduce saturating arithmetic for the
time units - this is merely code moves, renames and fixing of small
bugs.

Handle access to historical data for which there is no state (#3217)
With checkpoint sync in particular, and state pruning in the future,
loading states or state-dependent data may fail. This PR adjusts the
code to allow this to be handled gracefully.

In particular, the new availability assumption is that states are always
available for the finalized checkpoint and newer, but may fail for
anything older.

The `tail` remains the point where state loading de-facto fails, meaning
that between the tail and the finalized checkpoint, we can still get
historical data (but code should be prepared to handle this as an
error).

However, to harden the code against long replays, several operations
which are assumed to work only with non-final data (such as gossip
verification and validator duties) now limit their search horizon to
post-finalized data.

* harden several state-dependent operations by logging an error instead
of introducing a panic when state loading fails
* `withState` -> `withUpdatedState` to differentiate from the other
`withState`
* `updateStateData` can now fail if no state is found in database - it
is also hardened against excessively long replays
* `getEpochRef` can now fail when replay fails
* reject blocks with invalid target root - they would be ignored
previously
* fix recursion bug in `isProposed`

Validator monitoring (#2925)
Validator monitoring based on and mostly compatible with the
implementation in Lighthouse - tracks additional logs and metrics for
specified validators so as to stay on top on performance.

The implementation works more or less the following way:
* Validator pubkeys are singled out for monitoring - these can be
running on the node or not
* For every action that the validator takes, we record steps in the
process such as messages being seen on the network or published in the
API
* When the dust settles at the end of an epoch, we report the
information from one epoch before that, which coincides with the
balances being updated - this is a tradeoff between being correct
(waiting for finalization) and providing relevant information in a
timely manner)

SyncManager cleanups for backfill support (#3189)
* SyncManager cleanups for backfill support

Cleanups, fixes and simplifications, in anticipation of backfill support
for the `SyncManager`:

* reformat sync progress indicator to show time left and % done more
prominently:
  * old: `sync="sPssPsssss:2:2.4229:00h57m (2706898)"`
  * new: `sync="14d12h31m (0.52%) 1.1378slots/s (wQQQQQDDQQ:1287520)"`
* reset average speed when going out of sync
* pass all block errors to sync manager, including duplicate/unviable
* penalize peers for reporting a head block that is outside of our
expected wall clock time (they're likely on a different network or
trying to disrupt sync)
* remove `SyncFailureKind` (unused)
* remove `inRange` (unused)
* add `Q` for sync queue requests that are in the `SyncQueue` but not
yet in the `BlockProcessor` queue
* update last slot in `SyncQueue` after getting peer status
* fix race condition between `wakeupWaiters` and `resetWait`, where
workers would not be correctly reset if block verification returned a
completed future without event loop
* log syncmanager direction

* Fix ordering issue.
Some of the requests size of which are not equal to `chunkSize` could be processed in wrong order which could lead to sync process freezes.
