Logos is a continuation of the original cypherpunk movement, advocating the widespread use of strong cryptography and privacy-enhancing technologies as a route to social and political change.
We believe trust-minimized technologies will pave the way to a world where more humane social institutions and fairer means of governance can emerge, and are accessible to anyone in the world with an internet connection.
We believe that technological advancements in cryptography and peer-to-peer networking will fundamentally change the way we organise our societies, and address many of pitfalls that are a direct result of web 2.0 services.
We imagine a future in which individuals have the ability to enforce their own property and privacy rights, have control over their own data and how its shared, and can voluntarily participate in new means of social and economic coordination.
Logos is an experiment to build this future, and is built and operated entirely by its open source community. If you share our values and vision, stay tuned. We will invite you to join us through the still-early stages of the project.

<u>Codex</u> is a decentralised data storage platform that provides exceptionally strong censorship resistance and durability guarantees. It is the data storage layer of the Logos Network State.
**Durable**: Codex uses a technique known as erasure coding to efficiently ensure data is always available without the storage costs associated with replicating the data. Codex is also a protocol that is friendly to resource-restricted devices, and can endure high levels of churn and large numbers of ephemeral devices.
**Censorship resistant**: Centralised cloud storage providers have an established history of censoring data and, as de facto owners of said data, have the power to do so according to their own standards. Codex has no power to censor data, and protects against censorship and data loss from DDoS attacks, data corruption, and even the shutdown of a significant number of nodes.
**Decentralised**: Codex's incentivization mechanism promotes wide participation of data storage providers, both small and large, thus ensuring a robust network resistant to censorship and external attack.
**Accessible**: Participating in the Codex network is highly accessible thanks to its permissionless nature and bandwidth usage optimizations like its "lazy repair" recovery system.
Codex has a working PoC, and is expected to have a live testnet in production by Q4 2023.

Logos is a continuation of the original cypherpunk movement, which advocated for the widespread use of strong cryptography and technologies that enhance privacy and self sovereignty. At its core, Logos is a grassroots collective of like-minded people, unified in our belief in protecting human rights and defending against tyranny through technology.
Logos understands that cultures precede nations and nations precede states. As such, we are not building a community, but rather nurturing a citizenry with its own cultural and political identity. Building on its legacy, Logos is a re-imagination of the early internet, capable of evolving shared traditions, history, myths, legends, and eventually governance. At the moral centre, our citizens share the universal character strengths found across cultures: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence.
Logos is a liberated piece of cyberspace, where together we can form a new social contract, guided by a common court law system and voluntary, consensus based governing services. These systems are designed for plurality and hard-coded to respect fundamental human rights.

Logos is a grassroots movement to create a self-sovereign network state.
Such an organism—existing independently but in parallel to nation states under the cover of strong encryption—is a latent dream in the seminal imagination of science fiction, cypherpunk, and crypto-anarchist thinking.
In 1994 leading crypto-anarchist Timothy May [observed](https://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/classes/6.805/articles/crypto/cypherpunks/may-virtual-comm.html) how the combination of unbreakable public key cryptography and virtual communities would disrupt the nature of socioeconomic systems. In his view, personal computers, the expansion of the world wide web, functional pseudonymity, and digital cash would empower the creation of private, self-sustaining virtual communities. These groups would not need to rely on geographic proximity as a basis for cultural values, eventually displacing conventional national identities.
His ideas about the colonisation of cyberspace by independent organisms were echoed in John Barlows famous 1996 [independence declaration](https://www.eff.org/cyberspace-independence), which claimed that a new social contract was being enacted in cyberspace. This independent society would be founded on the consent of the governed, enlightened self-interest, and freedom of speech and mind, with global governance frameworks adjusted to a borderless world. However, the independence he asserted was impossible without fundamental breakthroughs in the underlying technology.
Decades later, the Bitcoin whitepaper showed a way forward by merging previous ideas such as proof-of-work algorithms, Merkle trees, digital signatures, and David Chaums pioneering early [blockchain](https://nakamotoinstitute.org/static/docs/computer-systems-by-mutually-suspicious-groups.pdf)-like architecture. The fundamental innovation involved solving the problem of double spending by using a peer-to-peer distributed timestamp with built-in cryptoeconomic incentives. This created an immutable, trustless global ledger that remains independent and self sovereign.
Ethereum effectively generalised this concept by adding a Turing-complete scripting language. Designed for universality in the creation of decentralised applications, it allowed for the trustless deployment of arbitrary functions with a focus on the consensus layer.

# Logos is building a Network State
Logos is a grassroots movement to provide trust-minimized, corruption resistant governing services and social institutions to underserved citizens.
It all begins with the construction of shared public infrastructure that forms the foundation of Logos. The network is comprised of modular protocols for communication, file storage and transactions, which together form a complete decentralized infrastructure stack.
Logos infrastructure will provide a base for the provisioning of the next-generation of governing services and social institutions - paving the way to economic opportunities to those who need them most, whilst respecting basic human rights through the networks design.
We invite technologists, creatives and policy experts along with anyone who is passionate about our mission to participate in its creation, and to help govern its future.
We will post more on how to join the community here soon.
<Manifesto>
<h2>Declaration of Independence in Cyberspace</h2>
<article>
<p>Every once in a while a revolutionary idea comes along that changes everything. These ideas and technologies do not occur by chance, they are the aggregation of ancient trends and the inventiveness of millions. Language, agriculture, parliaments, the printing press, networked computing, blockchains and artificial intelligence all transformed our world forever, rearranging human societies with a vision for the future. Today we are bringing forth such a vision.</p>
<p>To many of us it is obvious that the Westphalian Order that birthed the nation state is struggling to keep up with a multi-polar, interconnected world: the supra-national global elite is cannibalising its citizens and the fiat monetary system is collapsing before us in real time. We see this as the terminal phase of the Western project, a time of debt slavery, war, displacement, manipulation, corruption, bureaucracy, broken ecosystems, widespread surveillance, nihilist values, socialised impoverishment and the rise of populist authoritarianism on the left and the right.</p>
<p>Across the world, we are sleepwalking into a series of interconnected catastrophes, the likes of which have not been witnessed since World War II. While most think the situation is hopeless, we know its not.</p>
<p>To prove it, we are declaring independence from this dying order, reopening the frontier and establishing Logos, a self-sovereign network state founded on the solid ground of liberty, security, privacy, openness, decentralisation, inclusivity, innovation and resourcefulness.</p>
<p>We are a collective of free thinkers, idealists and pioneers who are reopening the frontier, rejecting empty postmodernity and establishing Logos, a self-sovereign network state founded on the solid ground of liberty, security, privacy, openness, decentralisation, inclusivity, innovation and resourcefulness.</p>
<p>Logos is the ancient Greek concept for the connection between language, reason and the order of the universe. For us, it represents a group of free thinkers, idealists, pioneers and builders searching for this immanent truth through conversation: a place to interact freely in a passionate, civilised and respectful manner, with the goal of collective liberation.</p>
<p>Logos is a global nation of like minded peers We offer our citizens a global nation of like-minded peers, cutting edge tools designed to protect our basic rights from oppression, ownership of these technologies, a voice in their governance and the opportunity to make a difference.</p>
<p>We offer meaning in a world starved of it.</p>
<p>Our vision is to harness the transformational power of discovering together, building on our deep urge to invent and imagine a world beyond the authoritarian structures of the decaying status quo. Our mission is neither optional nor guided by chance, it is born out of necessity.</p>
<p>We are at the critical juncture in history where the broken old system meets the new tools built to replace it, and we see no choice but to use them for our collective liberation. We know our success is inevitable.</p>
<p>To achieve independence of the mind and the body, we are building a versatile and powerful toolkit. The magic of cryptography gives us protection, while the resilience of blockchains allows for global, coordinated, hostile-resistant institutions.</p>
<p>We were there at the beginning, when Bitcoin proved this dream was possible. We share its ethos and extend its properties to a user owned, self-governed network state.</p>
<p>To do this we are taking on the challenge set in the initial vision for Ethereum: a fully decentralised tech stack, complete with p2p communications, file storage and a multi-chain ecosystem with network level privacy.</p>
<p>On top of this infrastructure we are building a parallel society with consensus based governing services, a common law court system and a culture hard coded to respect individual sovereignty and fundamental human rights.</p>
<p>What does a world where we succeed look like? What will your daily life be like in the Logos network state and how do we improve the problems our future citizens face?</p>
<p>In our world your life is as private as you want it to be. We are not the first to argue that privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. Privacy is not secrecy, it is a fundamental right.</p>
<p>In our world you own the services you use, no matter if you drive a taxi, start companies or organise politically. You own your communications, your apps, your marketplaces and your assets. This means a voice in their governance and a stake in their success.</p>
<p>In our world, the rule of law is transparent, fair and the true basis of our wealth. Our accessible governance system means transactions cost a fraction of what they do in the corrupt captured legacy bureaucracy. In our world, courts are trustworthy and mediation is minimal.</p>
<p>In our world we have a transparent, self-sovereign monetary policy that serves the interests of our citizens. Your assets are sovereign and secure. Protected legally and technologically, from outside and within. Logos is a digital Switzerland of the future age.</p>
<p>In our world culture is free, forkable and open: freedom of expression is guaranteed by our underlying technology. If you do not agree with what you have consented to, you are free to leave or remix.</p>
<p>In our world hegemony is replaced by consent, because hegemony is not only oppressive but inefficient, stifling creativity and limiting the potential for discovery. Logos is the next step in the evolution of society, from warlike and poverty-stricken barbarism to a prosperous civilisation of voluntary harmony.</p>
<p>In our world nation state tribalism has given way to a shared essence of language, culture, communication and ethics. Common glories manifested in voluntary consent to a shared imagination, mission and eventually, territory.</p>
<p>In our world the answers will not come from one person, one institution or one group. We believe the smallest minority is the individual, and we enable plurality instead of tolerating or censoring it.</p>
<p>In our world people are not treated like machines because people, not machines, are at the centre of what we envision.</p>
<p>Our world is anonymous and not elitist. We do not care who you are. We do not care about your gender, race or nationality. We judge ideas on their own merit and value relations through dialogue. We are people powered software and we are relevant because of our uncompromising beliefs.</p>
<p>We are bringing about the second enlightenment of the digital world, because the internet was not built for totalitarian control but for prosperity and emancipation.</p>
<p>We also believe no one is free until we are all free, because no one is an island: we are all pieces of the main. We know there is going to be a pushback on what we create, but the reward is a freedom nobody has ever felt before.</p>
<p>We will stop only when any person, anywhere, can experience it.</p>
<p>Because of this, we cannot do it alone.</p>
<p>If we are your people, join us.</p>

<u>Nomos</u> is a privacy-preserving, sovereign, modular blockchain that will serve as a scalable trustless agreements layer for Logos.
**Privacy preserving**: Nomos offers network-level privacy for users, developers and infrastructure providers. This includes giving developers building apps on Nomos and validators securing the network the ability to shield identifying information like location and transaction details.
**Sovereign**: Nomos' innovative execution layer enables digital communities and network states to customise parameters while benefiting from the shared security of the wider chain. Users may remain on the initial blockchain, fork and migrate to a new one with their own rules, or be on both. This flexibility gives network state participants local sovereignty and freedom of movement.
**Modular**: Nomos has a modular architecture separating data availability, coordination and execution layers. Modular design is essential for combining decentralisation with scalability. Understanding technology's exponential progress, Nomos is designed to enable seamless integration of the latest advances in zero-knowledge cryptography and similar emerging fields.

Logos is a re-imagining of the original ['Web 3.0'](http://gavwood.com/dappsweb3.html) vision.
Ethereum has successfully demonstrated the power of a decentralised socioeconomic system. However, as it stands today, it is not without its shortcomings. The lack of seamless communication and data storage protocols has resulted in most users only accessing the Ethereum network through centralised front-end interfaces, and there exists a pervasive use of centralised 'nodes-as-a-service'.
Moreover, the lack of network-level privacy for users and transactions violates the principle of minimal disclosure, creating an immutable database where users can easily be de-anonymised and tracked. This has opened the door for coercion and censorship of the network.
Logos addresses these problems through the development of a privacy-focused, neutral, decentralised technology stack. Logos is composed of three primary protocols: Nomos, Codex, and Waku, for consensus, communication, and file storage respectively.
Logos will provide a base for the provisioning of the next-generation of governing services, public goods, and social institutions, paving a way to economic opportunities for those who need them most, while respecting basic human rights across its design. The aim is to bring greater freedom, transparency, and stability to its citizens through voluntary participation.
Each protocol has a dedicated team at varying stages of research and development. When all three networks reach production and there exists seamless developer tooling, a solid foundation will be set for building truly private, sovereign, peer-to-peer services.
What follows is a more detailed look at each protocol.

title: Overview

# Logos is building a complete decentralised infrastructure stack - for everyone.
Advancements in cryptography and peer-to-peer networking have unlocked the possibility of re-imagining the public internet infrastructure that we conduct our lives upon. These technologies allow us to drastically increase the cost of surveillance, censorship and coercion as a means of safeguarding our freedoms.
The experiment begins with a decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO) dedicated to the construction of its user-owned, self-sovereign crypto network. The network is comprised of three primary modular peer-to-peer protocols for communication, file storage and trustless agreement.
Together, these form the foundation required for the next-generation of voluntary governing services and social institutions to emerge.
![overview](/subpages/logos-overview-graphic.jpg)
**Logos** - *The trustless agreements layer*.
The first primary protocol of Logos is Logos Blockchain: a heterogeneous blockchain network utilizing its own consensus algorithm to provide fast, scalable and secure trustless agreement, with near-instant transaction finality in user-defined execution environments.
The first two client implementations will be written in Nim and Rust once our first specification has been published.
**Waku** - *The ephemeral communication layer.*
Waku is a peer-to-peer communication layer. Waku removes centralized third parties from messaging - enabling private, secure, censorship-resistant communication. Waku is designed for generalized messaging, enabling both human-to-human or machine-to-machine communication.
Waku has its origins in Ethereums Whisper protocol, but is optimized for scalability and better usability. Waku is in production and is actively being used by projects like [Status](https://status.im/) and [WalletConnect](https://walletconnect.com/). Wakus economic spam protection is still under research, and a paper published on the topic can be found [here](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/vacp2p/research/master/rln-research/Waku_RLN_Relay.pdf).
[[Current Specification]](https://rfc.vac.dev/spec/6/) [[Research Forum]](https://forum.vac.dev/) [[Github]](https://github.com/vacp2p/)
**Codex** - *The storage layer.*
Codex is a decentralised storage protocol for durable information. Whilst p2p storage networks have been around for quite a long time, the lack of incentives, strong data availability, and durability guarantees make these networks unsuitable for a wide array of applications. In other words, without durability at the storage layer, it is impossible to build other reliable applications.
Codex aims to solve this by supplying an incentivized p2p storage network with strong availability and durability guarantees, and a resource restricted friendly protocol that can endure higher levels of churn and large amounts of ephemeral devices. Codex has a working Proof-of-Concept.

## Our Development Process
We are creating this technology stack out in the open, as a public good. Check out our [process](https://logos.co/technology/process) section to learn more about how we are going about this.
Logos is not yet production ready across every protocol in its stack. A number of research and engineering problems remain. We have no illusions as to the magnitude of the undertaking, and the work that lies ahead of us. We would like to invite anyone who is serious about contributing research or code to join us (we will be adding information on how to do this soon).

<u>Waku</u> is the peer-to-peer communication layer for the Logos network state. It removes centralised third parties from messaging, enabling private, scalable, censorship-resistant communication.
**Private**: Waku leverages cutting-edge zero-knowledge encryption to guarantee all messaging and associated metadata benefit from rock-solid privacy, protecting users from third-party intervention.
**Censorship resistant**: Decentralised human and machine communication, with no single point of failure. Wakus native incentivization mechanism stimulates an expanding node distribution, promoting an increasingly secure network.
**Modular**: Waku protocols are adaptive, and can be customised based on unique demands. Waku is built to flourish even in resource-restricted environments like browsers and mobile devices.
**Scalable**: Waku employs message sharding for efficient throughput, while its discovery protocol ensures a user only connects to nodes serving messages they are interested in.
Waku is in production and is actively being used by projects like Status, Railgun, and WalletConnect v2.
